The Evolving Story of Coffee Lab Nairobi

Coffee Lab Nairobi was born out of a weekend passion project. The founder, Wanjiru, has a background in particle physics, and a career in tech, training neural networks. Her journey began by renting time a roastery in Kiambu on the weekends.

How it started

The Beginings

Wanjiru's journey began by renting time at a Roastery Kiambu during the weekends, where she delved into developing roast flavor profiles through iterative experimentation, a process that resonated deeply with her scientific curiosity. Passionate about coffee, she deepened her engagement by taking the plunge and buying a small batch roaster which she'd spend most of her weekends and evenings perfecting her craft. In March 2024, she took the bold decision to leave to leave her full-time tech job and fully commit to her coffee passion.

HOW ITS GOING

The Roastery Today

We're proud of the team, space and relationships we've built around speciality coffee. We have a growing subscriber community, and we get to share new coffees with them, and tell the stories of the innovative producers behind them.

what keeps us going

Our Why.

Running a business is challenging but our strong mission keeps us going.

Over 95% of coffee is exported green with roasting, packaging, and branding typically done outside the producing countries, where it can add over 300% to its value. This setup heavily favors roasters and retailers in consuming countries, leading to an imbalance in profits.
Our goal is to disrupt this imbalance by fundamentally rethinking the coffee supply chain.
